High Point Elementary School
has been completely reimagined to support next generation learning and reflect
the spirit of its vibrant community. The original instructional areas were
dark, poorly proportioned, and organized within open-plan floor plates that
were no longer conducive to contemporary educational delivery. SEI’s
transformative approach included the demolition of 40,758 square feet of ill-suited
space and the modernization of 31,612 square feet of the existing building. A
new two-story classroom addition establishes a looped circulation pattern
organized around a central courtyard, creating clarity, connectivity, and
abundant natural light throughout.
The addition redefines the
school’s presence with a pedestrian promenade that leads to a grand gathering
space at the new administration wing. Designed for safety and visibility, this
welcoming entry sequence allows administration to surveil the entire site while
fostering a strong sense of arrival. Public and specialty programs are
strategically aligned along a singular interior axis, marked by a distinctive
feature wall that intuitively guides visitors to shared amenities designed for
after hours community use.
Working closely with a
passionate committee of stakeholders, SEI infused the culture and environmental
context of the High Point community into every aspect of the design. Subtle
references to the school’s connection to the Chesapeake Bay are expressed through
shifting elevations and interior amphitheaters that evoke the form of a crab
bushel. A magnificent champion oak tree serves as both inspiration and anchor,
shaping an outdoor classroom and orienting collaborative learning areas within
the two-story instructional wing toward this extraordinary natural asset.
To further blur the boundary
between indoor and outdoor learning, the design incorporates a biophilic
courtyard rich with natural features, an outdoor amphitheater for performances,
and exploration zones directly adjacent to art and science classrooms. The
result is a school that proudly expresses its unique identity through a playful
yet elegant façade, welcoming its dedicated community and inspiring the next
generation of learners.
