Firm Profile

Smolen • Emr • Ilkovitch Architects was established in Washington, D.C. as Victor Smolen and Associates in October 1959.  The office relocated to Montgomery County, Maryland in 1976 and later operated under the name of Smolen + Associates Architects, Inc.  Mr. James W. Emr, AIA, joined the firm in June 1992. Mr. Emr became a partner in the firm in 1995 and, upon Mr. Smolen’s retirement, became the principal of the firm in January 1998. Mr. Ran Ilkovitch, AIA, became the Vice President and Partner of the firm in 2008. The firm was renamed Smolen • Emr • Ilkovitch Architects in 2010. We are currently in our 52nd year of successful business operation and are incorporated in the State of Maryland.

SEI senior architectural staff maintains architectural registrations in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Delaware and New York, as well as registration with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards which facilitates reciprocal registration in other states. SEI is a small business firm with 22 employees, including 2 Principals, 4 Project Managers, 4 Project Architects, 8 Architectural Support Staff, and 4 Administrative Employees.

During 52 years of continuous practice, SEI has designed a wide variety of project types including educational facilities, recreational facilities, religious facilities, office buildings, shopping centers, industrial buildings, automobile dealerships, and residential buildings.

We have developed well over 300 projects throughout the region, extensively for counties within the State of Maryland, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia. All of our educational projects in the past five years, over 40 of them, have been completed on time and within budget and none of our projects have resulted in litigation.

SEI designs buildings that use key resources more efficiently to provide healthier work and living environments. We have over 30 years of experience with high performance school building design and the principles of the LEED checklist and the Sustainable Building Industry Council (SBIC) have always been incorporated with our company design practices.
